DDx: cellulitis, erysipelas, necrotizing fasciitis, deep vein thrombosis, chronic venous insufficiency, contact dermatitis, stasis dermatitis, lipodermatosclerosis, insect bite reaction, allergic reaction, acute gout, drug eruption, lymphedema, lymphangitis, superficial thrombophlebitis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, herpes zoster, impetigo, fungal infection
PLAN:
Investigations:
- Blood work: , , , ,
- Wound culture
- Ultrasound if deep abscess suspected
- Venous doppler if DVT suspected
- X-Ray if foreign body suspected
- MRI if deep infection suspected
- Bone scintigraphy if osteomyelitis suspected
Treatments:

- IV antibiotics if not improving on oral antibiotics
- Incision and drainage
- Wound dressing
- Affected area demarcated with a pen
- Tetanus prophylaxis
- Elevation of affected area
- Acetaminophen, ibuprofen as needed
- Blood sugar control
Further care:
- Referral to infectious disease if no improvement after 72 hours
- Follow-up in days for re-evaluation
- Return if redness expands, fever develops, or if new symptoms occur
